Introduction to the projectProfessor Sally Brown, National Teaching Fellow and Project Director, introduced the team members present: Professor Phil Race, Bob Rotherham, Jason McCartney, Professor Ralph Tench, Annisa Sulliman, Louise Conyard and Janice Priestley. She detailed the programme for the day and explained how the project came about and why it is important to the students, the university and to higher education.
Introduction to assessmentStudents were given an introduction to university assessment and the types of assessment that they are likely to find in universities in the UK, Europe and Internationally. Sally also introduced students to the Bologna process.
Glossary TaskAn Assessment Glossary had been prepared by Professor Phil Race. Twelve of the words had been selected from the glossary to present the students with a task. Having listened to the presentation on assessment, students were divided into pairs. In each pair, one student was given a set of terms used in assessment and the other was given a set of descriptions. Each pair of students was asked to pair up the term and the desciption. This allowed students to identify terms which they may come across which they are not yet familiar with. They were later given the attached glossary document to help them develop their assessment vocabularly. The glossary will be a developing document and students have been encouraged to contribute to it terms which they become aware of which they have not previously known, or which have found are used and which they have had to find the meaning of.

Institutional overview interviewSenior Lecturer Jason McCartney interviewed Pro-Vice-Chancellor Sally Brown and asked her a series of questions in order to gain an insight into assessment at Leeds Metropolitan University. The interview loosely followed a script, but Jason developed this as the interview progressed, using his experience to probe areas of interest further in response to Sally's answers.
How does this fit into my courseSenior Lectuer Annisa Suliman explained to the student how the work which they were to undertake on the project would be assessed during their course. She stressed the value of the project in providing authentic assessment as part of their course. Student were given details of how they would be assessed in the module and of the marking scheme.
Course/Programme Leader interviewBBC Radio Leeds broadcast journalist Andew Edwards gave advise to students before interviewing Leeds Metropolitan University Lecturer and Course/Programme Leader, John Smith, on the types of assessment used on his taught Masters programme. Andrew was working to a script which, like Jason, he had been given shortly before the interview. Andrew conducted the interview, probing areas particular of interest and seeking clarification of terms as they emerge in the discussion. Following the interview he did a debrief with the students and answered questions.
